Paper Proposal

Research Proposal

The Ku Klux Klan started after the civil war during the reconstruction period of the United States in the 20th century. The Klan was one of the most violent and dangerous groups in American history. The Ku Klux Klan or the KKK is a white supremacy group with an anti Semitic message using violence against other races including Blacks, Jews and other minority groups.

I will start my paper with the history of the Klan and where it originated. The Klan was started in Pulaski, Tennessee and mainly focused on brotherhood but as years passed the meaning changed. The first Klan was stopped by President Hoover during the reconstruction period because of the violence that the Klan brought throughout the United States. The second KKK group was started in Stone Mountain, Georgia in unofficially in 1915 and officially in 1921. This second group started the violence and really took every meaning of brotherhood out of the KKK. The most lynching took place in 1919 and the Ku Klux Klan had its hand in those lynching. The 20th century second Klan lasted till the 40s and then died down.

The third Klan started in the early 1950s. The Klan in the 50s showed more prejudice against African Americans. During this time the Ku Klux Klan’s violence towards blacks was more publicized to America. Brown vs. Broad of Education in 1954 and the Southern Manifesto is a couple of examples that involve the Klan. The Klan played a big part in the racist part of America. Throughout my paper I will discuss the Klans involvement starting in the after the civil war and through the 1970s.

I will also talk about the violence of the KKK in the three klans. When did the violence start in each Klan and why blacks and other minority groups? I will look at what pushed the Klan over the edge to kill people. Many of the Klan members has so much hatred for other races that if you looked at them the wrong way they would kill you. The Klan was an all white supremacy group and also had different symbols that represented them like the burning cross. There is a meaning to all the symbols. The KKK was the most violent in the civil rights movement and throughout this time the many violent things were recorded and shown to the world. The violence is a part of the KKK and it will always be a part of them.
